The tooling manager is ultimately responsible for all new molds.  They are responsible for managing Design for Manufacturing and procurement of all new molds required to produce parts per customers specifications. This individual analyzes the supplied molds to ensure proper function and performance.  The tooling manager also manages/directs any modifications/repairs to existing molds.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, & Authority

  • Maintains SIM Injection Mold Tooling Guidelines with reviews, updates and submissions to mold making supplier base annually or as needed.
  • Reviews component design and function with Project Engineers and customers (as necessary).
  • Quotes all new molds through detailed quotation requests on a timely basis. Provides costing to sales department with build contingencies or design recommendations.  Requests formal quotations from toolmakers, which may involve multiple iterations.
  • Procures all new molds with mold maker selection, creates electronic mold folder, writes contract, and creates DFM specifications for preliminary mold design. Negotiates construction issues and pricing if necessary to ensure mold conforms to SIM standards and safe handling /operation for the technical staff.
  • Reviews and approves the mold Leads design review of all molds with the Project Engineering group, Process Engineering Staff, internal Toolroom Manager, Quality department and Sales. Reviews all designs for function and reliability to ensure that they follow company and industry standards, as well as customer requirements.
  • Tracks PO expenses to mold budget and PO log. Ensures that tool building is within budget and supplies weekly schedule Visits toolmaker as required to maintain delivery schedule and ensure design.
  • Reviews construction for compliance with design and specifications at tool delivery. Requests any modifications/corrections and initiates sample request through the Project Engineer.
  • Notifies Project Engineer of any changes-part geometry, mold construction, and delivery s
  • Attends mold sampling. Coordinates all mold corrections and adjustments.
  • Evaluates first piece parts with Process Engineer, and Project Coordinates all mold corrections and adjustments. Resamples as necessary until customer approval is received.
  • Maintains mold folders and files electronically. Keeps all documentation accurate and up to date. Requests revised mold drawing from toolmaker as
  • Tracks weekly tool room maintenance, repair, and overhaul records and provides sales and CFO weekly report on costs with determination of internal or customer billing.
  • Recommends maintenance schedules for molds.
  • Prepares annual budgets for customer billable MRO costs for key customers.
  • Reviews all incoming transfer molds with tool room and provides preparation for production budget to Project Engineer.
  • Coaches, mentors, and provides training in mold design to Project Engineers.
  • Uses good interpersonal communication techniques to work with subordinates and/or co- workers. Is courteous and helpful when interacting with fellow Attends available interpersonal skill training courses. Helps to create a pleasant work environment.
  • Learns, practices, and supports all Lean Manufacturing tools to assist the Company in the continuous improvement
  • Maintains a safe working environment to minimize the possibility of an injury. Reports any unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Performs other duties and assignments as directed by the Director-Project Engineering.

Required Education, Credentials, & Certifications

  • Associate degree in injection mold design and mold making or the equivalent in work experience.

Job Specification

  • Minimum five to eight years of experience in injection mold
  • Minimum five years of experience in contracting injection

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Communication and technical writing
  • Proficiency in all areas of injection molding including materials, processing, tooling, and part design.
  • Experience with injection molding simulation and optimization
  • Knowledge of new product development processes and best practices.
  • Proficiency in mathematics and statistics and problem-solving.
